Hi everyone!! :)
Today starts up a new challenge over at More Mixed Media Challenges! This month's challenge is to use the color "Red" on your creations. It doesn't have to be all red but we would like to see some of it on your creations. However, using this color is optional. :)
I created a Valentine canvas home decor piece. Here it is:
I started with an 8 by 8 blank canvas. I used some white gesso to coat and then took some white tissue paper, crumpled it up and adhered it down to the canvas with gesso. I mixed some red and white paint to get a perfect soft pink and mixed it with some texture paste. I spread this all over the background and added in a little bit of red and pink glitter. Subtle so that the background wasn't overpowered by glitter. I also took some fired brick ink and went around all four edges of the canvas to bring in that red color some more. You can see the background below.
I used a Prima doll stamp, stamped on book paper. Stamped her clothes portion again on pattern paper from an old MS paper pad. I paper pieced the outfit on her after using some distress inks on her body. Added a heart jewel to the center of her belt. Added in a face for her and some highlights using my white gel pen. Adhered her to a strip of burlap/lace trim and hot glued it down. The music note is a stamp by Heidi Swapp. I inked it using vintage photo distress ink. Added in some fire brick as well. Stamped the words, "Sweet Valentine and Love" to this piece. The stamps were from a MCT stamp set. Adhered this to the back of a wooden frame that I painted red. And added some lace to the back of it on three sides. Hot glued this frame piece down on top of a piece of book paper that I tore the edges on and distresed, then hot glued this piece down to the canvas.
Now the embellishing part! I took some metal pieces, a large and a small frame, a key, a keyhole, a number brad and a heart shaped metal piece and I gesso'd each piece up to distress them. To the top of this frame piece, I hot glued a metal frame that I glued some pretty paper to the inside. To the top if it, I cut off the "legs" of the brad and adhered down the number "14" in honor of Valentine's Day. Above this at the very edge of the frame, I hot glued the key. To the key I added a pink heart jewel and some pink paint around certain edges. I hot glued the tip of the key to the keyhole that I painted red and then glued this down to the canvas.
To the bottom of the frame, I added various sized hearts that I cut from the pattern paper. To the right of the hearts, I added in a metal heart frame that I added a pretty heart to the inside. Closer toward the doll's feet, I added in some flowers that I added glitter to using my Spectrum Noir clear sparkle pen. I also added in there, a double heart charm that I painted pink. Then I took a few tiny glitter hearts that I cut out from the pattern paper and glued them down in various places. I took a pearl brad, cut off the "legs or prongs" off the back, and adhered it to the very top of the doll in the corner of the canvas and adhered the heart shaped metal piece that I painted with white and different shades of pink to the top right of the doll. And last but not least, I took some gorgeous vintage lace and added some trim to the very bottom of the canvas piece. I hope you like it!
I love it and I have it hanging on my wall!
